  1. Google photos matched a scanned picture of my uncle when he is about 8 and put it with all the modern photos of him (he is now 72). I did have several photos of my uncle, including a couple of scanned images from when he was in his late 40s. But it totally blew my mind.

  2. Little bit of back story.

Unfortunately my grandmother passed this year. I have a variety of photos of her for a slideshow at her memorial on my phone. While i was messing around with the Photos app there is a People and Places section. I saw that she had a section so i clicked on it and there was a “review” button where you click which photos are correct so the app can learn. And this is what I saw.

Definitely took me by surprise and was another one of those “whoa look how far technology has come” moments

  3. It isn’t perfect, but mine is pretty good at distinguishing my pets from each other, which I find amazing. Three dogs and five cats over the course of my life, and it’s got maybe an 80% success rate in not only detecting but accurately tagging each animal.

  4. I noticed this with Windows’ facial recognition too. Discovered a while back that they had grouped up all my pictures based on who was in them, and it found matches that looked nothing like each other, but were still the same person. Images were all unnamed/DSCN#### type formats and taken years apart. Don’t know how they do it, but it’s kind of creepy.

  5. I wonder if, in this case, the algorithm determined that the photo one the left is of an elderly woman and that photo on the right is an old photograph of a young woman, and made the inference based on the relative ages of others in the OP’s collection of photos. Like, besides the besides the broader similarities (I.e. skin tone), OP’s grandma *had* to be the one in the older photo. Just a hunch.
