  1. is that tile or paint/plaster?

    absolutely beautiful whatever it is. cant even imagine the time & effort to create something like that. ive been avoiding painting my living room for like 3 months now, just 1 color, couple of walls.

  2. I took humanities because I thought it would be a blow off easy A elective course. It turned out to be really fascinating and the professor was great despite him blatantly favoring the attractive girls whenever chance arose.

    Anyway, I really liked the architecture section and I took up his suggestion to do a walking tour of Cleveland. He made sure to remind me to always look up when entering buildings and look for stuff like this. That was almost 15 years ago and I still make it a habit to.

  3. I feel like they were trying to emulate the night sky when building this and in a way, it is a message from the past about how amazing the night sky must have been to inspire something like this before all the light pollution.

  4. Personally, I prefer mosques over cathedrals. Cathedrals are impressive, but they’re just too busy. Mosques keep it simple, simetrical and colourful.

  5. Probably related to the fact I’ve had visual aura migraines since I was three years old, however:

    I have “seen” this kind of stuff almost all my life. Its at about the initial visual distance that the grayed out circle of the migraine aura takes up, before the grayed out circle spins and fractures off the Fort formation and right before I lose my ability to see, literally, for a half hour to several hours.

    What I see at those times is just about an exact replica of the style of these illustrations, and since I saw these Mosque illustrations I have wondered if the people who designed them had migraines themselves. No drug involved BTW. Just my brain “high” on migraine aura. Afterwards my head hurts so badly I can easily understand how the practice of trepanning came about, ‘cuz OMG. I keep moving from place to place like you would if your hand was on a burner, but there was no place to move but other burners. Bit hard to explain the extent of the aftermath pain unless you have them too.

    Anyway. I think its part of how the visual system of our brains processes information, we don’t see things like bits of a collage, its more some cells specialize in noticing corner like bits, some are set up to recognize a bit of fine line next to a darker thick line. Beautiful in the contest of the mosque for sure.

  6. This mosque was built on the order of Abbas the Great of the Safavid dynasty in the early 1600s. This was pretty much the peak of Iran’s power after it had converted to Islam. At this point of history, the strongest power in the world was probably the Ottoman Empire, who had an empire the size of Macedonia under Alexander, except this empire was extremely stable and had a massive and well armed army that no power in Europe could beat. Abbas led Iran to two decisive victories against this power, allowing Iran to temporarily retake Baghdad and maintain significant control in the Caucasus.

    A lot of people say the Islamic golden age ended after the Mongol’s destruction of Baghdad, but in my opinion, it didn’t really end till the late 1600s/early 1700s with the stagnation of the Ottomans in the 1700s (and eventual rapid decline in the 1800s) and the collapse of the Safavid and Mughal empires in the mid 1700s.

  7. Here is my dream ;

    I am a muslim and go to Mosque maybe once in a week. Right before the praying people always give us some cookies and tea. Around 200-300 people. Anyway , i am planning to prepare a nice shroom tea ,level 5-6 something like that and go at the corner watch people. 😈
